River Falls mourns loss of a hero

September 18, 2009 by Nicki Faulk

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sgt. Gordon’s loved ones:

Army officials say a Stryker Brigade soldier who fell ill in southern Afghanistan has died at a military hospital in Germany.

According to an Army statement, 22-year-old Sgt. Robert David Gordon II of River Falls, Ala., got sick last Friday and died Wednesday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. His illness was not disclosed but is described as not related to combat.

Gordon enlisted in the Army more than four years ago in Montgomery. He was assigned to the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, which was sent to Afghanistan in July.

I would like to thank you all for the cards that my mother has recieved from your organization in the death of my cousin Sgt David Gordon. Your cards, from all around the states, have really touched her and make her feel that there are others that care.

We have been a Military family for years. My dad, husband, and both of my boys have served in the military. I believe that your thoughtfulness in sending out your thoughts and prayers are a healing for my mother. She lost her nephew at a time while she is worrying about her own, 20 year old, grandson. Do add my son to your list of prayers for a safe return. He is serving in the Marines and in Afghanistan. He informed us that he was going into a danger zone, where we don’t know, but I do know that the family doesn’t need another soldier to be laid to rest in this family. We do know that this is a cause worth fighting for, because we live it every day…freedom.

David fly with the Angels!! We love you and you will be missed.
